Forget the Internet was ever invented. You have a product
you want to sell and you want a cost effective way to get
this product in front of millions of buyers. You probably aren't
going to go out and build a new shopping center just to sell one
product.
In the Wild Wild Web Evolution, everyone did just
that, building virtual *shopping centers* of their own. To make matters
worse, everyone built their shopping centers at the end of deserted
highways. The end result was that many people, were left with thousands
of dollars in Web design bills and no buying traffic to pay for
it. A few start-ups did make this model work simply because they
had very deep pockets to do so.
Today, companies like eBay, Yahoo, Amazon and ubid collectively
attract hundreds of millions of buyers to their shopping
portals every month. These big names have not only rolled up
the consumer market, but they have almost become synonymous with
buying online. The good thing is that all of these big name portals
will gladly let you set up a *kiosk* within their site.
As a seller, you not only represent a great source of revenue
for them, but also provide diverse commerce content for their
site. By having a presence within these portals you will automatically
attract buyers who just happen to be there already. It is a win-win
situation for both parties.
That's what Jalali Hartman, cofounder and developer for Marketplace
Manager realized. He eventually faced up to the fact that his pretty Web
site was nothing more than just that...a pretty Web site.
So, one day he decided to put some inventory up for sale
on Yahoo and eBay and immediately sold $30,000 in merchandise.
Since then, these places have not only helped him grow his business,
they have become his business. He no longer had to pay to drive
traffic to his deserted shopping center in the middle of Nowhere.
He simply realized: Why buy the well when I just need the water?
